A xylene is a generic term for a group of three aromatic hydrocarbon isomers. It is a clear,sweet smelling liquid used in several industries such as the fuel, printing, rubber and paint industries.

Drinking Water Standard: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for various water supply contaminants which could pose a health risk.

The MCL for xylene in the water supply is 10 mg/L. If xylene is present in the water supply at a level above the MCL, water authorities are duty bound to reduce the contamination.

Water authorities are also duty bound to notify their customers within 30 days.

Health Effects: Short term exposure to levels of xylene in excess of the MCL could lead to problems with balance, coordination and cognitive abilities.

Long term exposure to the chemical could lead to problems with the central nervous system, kidney and liver.
