Filter Volatile Organic Compounds Removal...
Making Your Tap Water Safer
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are chemicals that are emitted in gaseous form from sources such as cosmetics, cleaning products, fuels, paints, vehicle exhausts and waxes. Learn about voc removal from your tap water using water filters.
List of VOCs
Alachlor; Atrazine; Benzene; Carbofuran; Carbon tetrachloride; Chlorobenzene; Chloropicrin; 2,4-D; Dibromochloropro-pane; o-dichlorobenzene; p-dichloroben-zene; 1,2-dichloroethane; 1,1-dichloro-ethylene; cis-1,2-dichloroethylene; Trans-1,2-dichloroethylene; 1,2-dichloro-propane; cis-1,3-dichloropropylene; Dinoseb; Endrin; Ethylbenzene; Ethylene dibromide; Haloacentonitriles; Haloketones; Heptachlor epoxide; Hexachlorobutadiene; Hexachlorocyclo-pentadiene; Lindane; Methoxychlor; Pentachlorophenol; Simazine; Styrene; 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane; Tetrachloro-ethylene; Toluene; 2,4,5-TP; Tribromo-acetic acid; 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene; 1,1,1-trichloroethane; 1,1,2-trichloroethane; Trichloroethylene (TCE); Trihalomethanes (THMs); Xylenes
Potential Source of Volatile Organic Compounds
When VOCs are exposed, some evaporates and other parts may enter into the the water table with the help of rain water and melting snow. From there, they migrate into dams and wells. For instance, benzene may contaminate ground water via fuels leaks or under ground pipeline or tank leaks. In the water table, VOCs thrive because the cool, dark environment prevents them from breaking down quickly.
Potential Health Hazards of Volatile Organic Chemicals
This varies depending on the contaminant. Some VOC are known or suspected cancer-causing agents or have been linked to liver and kidney damage.
Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL)
The EPA set the MCL for each VOC in your tap water. Public water companies are required to monitor your water supply to prevent the MCL from being exceeded. If levels are higher than the MCL, the water companies are duty bound to take steps to reduce it. If you get water from a private well, it is your responsibility to have your water tested for VOCs.
VOC Removal
Water purifiers or filters certified to NSF/ANSI 53 standard are capable of removing VOCs. These countertop water purifiers and under the counter water filter systems are certified to this standard and hence, are perfect for getting the job done.
