About Turbidity & How Best To Remove it

turbidity meters

Turbidity is a measure of how cloudy or hazy water is. A more scientific definition is the degree to which a liquid loses its transparency due to the presence of suspended matter.

Source of Contamination: There are various sources that cause water to get hazy but some of the most notable are algae growth, urban and industrial runoff and soil erosion - all of which can contaminate reservoir water.

Drinking Water Standards: According to the The World Health Organization (WHO), the ideal level of this contaminant in drinking water should be between 1 and 5 Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU). Of course, the smaller the NTU, the better.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that water cloudiness should be no higher 5 NTU. Household water filter systems must make certain that the cloudiness in drinking water be less than or equal to 1 NTU and in 95% of daily water samples taken in any month, the cloudiness should not exceed 0.3 NTU.

Health Effects: Nobody like the look of dirty water and so people filter water to get rid of the cloudiness.

Removal of Contaminant: Getting a household water filter system that is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 53 or Standard 58 will remove this contaminant effectively. Examples of such devices are carbon/charcoal home water treatment systems as well as reverse osmosis water systems.

This counter top water filter and undersink water filter offer cutting edge carbon filtration that has been voted Best Buy by the Consumers Digest Magazine for 5 years in a row.
