Removing Trihalomethanes In Drinking Water
Trihalomethanes in drinking water (THMs) are amongst the most popular contaminants in drinking water. They are group of four chemicals (trichloromethane, dbromochloromethane, bromodichloromethane and tribromomethane) formed when chlorine or other disinfectants used to control microorganism in your tap water react with naturally occurring organic and inorganic matter in water. Source of Contamination: THMs are a byproduct of the chlorination in the water treatment process. Health Effects: Increased risk of cancer and liver, kidneys, or central nervous system problems. Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL): 0.08 mg/L is maximum allowed in you tap water. Water Treatment: Activated carbon or charcoal filters certified to standard NSF 53 will remove these contaminants. These undercounter water purifiers and countertop water purifiers are certified to this standard.
