The sulfate in water is a substance that is naturally occurring. The concentration of the sulfates in drinking water varies according to the mineral content of the earth in the particular area.
Drinking Water Regulation: The EPA sets what is known as the maximum contaminant level (mcl). The mcl is the maximum amount of a particular contaminant that is legally allowed in the water supply. The EPA believes that if a particular contaminant exists in water at a level above the mcl, it is a health risk to public consumption. If the contaminant exists in tap water at a level below the mcl, the EPA believes that the water is safe for human consumption. The mcl is enforceable by law. Should your water supplier discover that a particular contaminant exist in water at a level above the mcl, immediate steps must be taken to reduce the contamination to pre-mcl levels. Furthermore, your water authority must notify you and other customers of the problem within 30 days of discovering the contamination. But not all contaminants are considered harmful to public health. Such contaminants tend only to affect the look, smell and taste of water. The sulfates in drinking water fall within this category. Too much sulfate in water will give water a salty taste, which for most people is undesirable. For such non-threatening drinking water contaminants, the EPA sets what is known as the secondary mcl. Unlike the mcl for harmful contaminants, secondary mcl is not enforceable by law. Water authorities only use it as a guide to make their water more acceptable to public taste. The secondary mcl for the sulfate in water is 250mg/L.

Health Risks: Sulfate in drinking water is not considered threatening to public health. However, should the sulfates exist in water at levels above the mcl, drinking such water could cause gastrointestinal irritation to sensitive groups within the population.
