Removing chlorine by products from your tap water is vital. Although chlorine is universally used to disinfect water, there are tremendous downside to using this substance.

When chlorine interacts with organic matter in our water system it forms some harmful by-products - Trihalomethanes and Haloacetic acids.

Trihalomethanes (THms) consist of four chemicals: chloroform, bromoform, bromodichloromethane, and dibromochloromethane.

Haloacetic acids (HHAs) consist of monochloroacetic acid, dichloroacetic acid, trichloroacetic acid, monobromoacetic acid, and dibromoacetic acid.

Drinking Water Standard: According to the EPA's risk assessment, your water supply shouldn't have THMs in excess of 80 ppb. This standard is also known as the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL)

For HHA's, the MCL as per EPA regulation is 60ppb.

Health Risk: Over the long term, consuming water that contains chlorination by products over the MCL could lead to cancer, kidney and liver damage.

Home Water Treatment: Activated carbon filters are the principal ways to remove theses by-products from your tap water.

Good activated water filters are certified to NSF 53 standard.

Both these NSF 53 certified under sink water filter and counter water filter are great at removing these contaminants.
