Removing PCB From Drinking Water

Polychlorinated biphenyls also known as PCB, are a set of organic chemicals that can be without odor or slightly aromatic solids or oily liquids. They were used in adhesives, coolants, hydraulic oils, sealants and other industrial applications.

Polychlorinated biphenylsare perhaps better known by their trade names:

Aroclor, Chlorinated diphenyl, Chlorextol, Clophen, Dykanol, Fenclor, Inerteen, Kanechlor, Monter, Noflamol, Pyralene, Santotherm, Sovol or Therminol.

Source Of Water Contamination:

Since 1979, the US Congress banned domestic production so it is less of a threat to our water supply than before.

However products containing polychlorinated biphenyls prior to the ban are still out there.

These contaminants may get into your water supply as a result of run-off from: illegal dumping, dumping of polychlorinated biphenyls into landfills not designed for hazardous waste, leaks from improperly managed land fills and dumping of consumer products containing polychlorinated biphenyls.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that between 1987-1983, over 74000 pounds of polychlorinated biphenyls were released into the land and water.

Potential Health Effects: Polychlorinated biphenyls have been linked to cancer and also have a negative impact on the endocrine, immune, nervous and reproductive systems.

Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL): If the levels of polychlorinated biphenyls in your tap water exceed 0.5 ppb, water authorities are duty bound to notify the public through the print and electronic media.

Eliminating Polychlorinated Biphenyls From Drinking Water: Water filtration systems certified to NSF Standard 53 are very effective in removing these contaminants from your tap water.

Charcoal or carbon water filters are certified to this standard and will provide safe drinking water in your home.
