Removing The Nitrate In Water With Filtration

The EPA regulates the nitrate in water because it is believed that nitrate can pose a danger to public health.

What are nitrates: Nitrates (and nitrites) are nitrogen-oxygen chemical units which combine with various organic and inorganic compounds.

Potential Source of Contaminant: Nitrates are used in fertilizers. Surface runoff from fertilizer use could end up in the water supply.

Also nitrates can be leached from septic tanks or eroded from natural deposits and end up in the water supply.

Drinking Water Standard: Under the Safe Drinking Water Act, the US. EPA is mandated to determine drinking water standards for drinking water contaminants that pose a danger to public health.

One of the primary drinking water standards is the maximum contaminant level (mcl). The MCL is the maximum amount of a particular drinking water contaminant that is legally allowed in the water supply.

Water authorities must routinely screen for contaminants that are assigned mcls. If a particular contaminant exist in the water supply at a level above the mcl, water authorities must take these two steps.

One, they must reduce the contamination to sub-mcl levels and secondly they must notify water customers within 30 days of discovery of the problem.

The mcl for nitrate in water is 10 mg/L.

Short Term Health Risks: Infants who drink water that has excessive nitrates in it could experience serious illness possibly death. This is due to the converting of nitrate to nitrite by the body, which can reduce the oxygen-carrying capacity of the an infant's blood.

Symptoms of this happening includes shortness of breath and blueness of the skin.

Long Term Health Risks: There is he possibility that drinking water that contains nitrates in excess of the mcl over an extended period of time could cause diuresis, increased starchy deposits and hemorrhaging of the spleen.

Home Water Treatment: Municipal water authorities do what they can to ensure your tap water is safe to drink. But this does not mean that the water you drink contains no contaminants. Nor does it mean that serious contamination cannot occur.

In 1995 for example, there was an outbreak of cryptosporidium in the drinking water which resulted in over 400,000 people getting stomach illnesses and 54 deaths.

And then more recently, there have been troublesome reports of drugs in drinking water.

To give your family and additional layer of safety and further reduce the risk of them drinking contaminated tap water you should install a home water filtration system.

Depending on the type of system, bacteria, chemicals and sediments can be removed from your tap water. Not only will your water be cleaner, it will taste a lot better too.

To remove the nitrates in drinking water, you'll need a home water filter system that is certified to NSF 53, 58 or 62. NSF certification guarantees that the filtration unit your possess is actually able to remove the contaminant in question.

This under sink water filter and countertop water filter are certified to NSF 53 standard.

This reverse osmosis water filter system is certified to NSF 58 standard. These devices will give added protection against nitrates

A water distiller has also been proven to remove the nitrate in water.

Give you family the protection they deserve - get a home water filter today to remove the nitrate in water and other harmful contaminants.
