If You Don't Want Mercury In Your Tap Water....
Mercury is a heavy silvery-white metal that is liquid at room temperature and poisonous. It is used in batteries, light bulbs, switches and other components. Source of Contamination: Waste from industrial facilities and runoffs from landfills can contaminate water supply. Drinking Water Standards: The maximum contaminant level (mcl) for this substance is 2 parts per billion (ppb). Water suppliers must test for this substance to ensure the mcl is not exceeded. If it is, water suppliers are required to notify the public. Potential Health Effects: Ingesting water containing this heavy metal at levels above the mcl, can lead to nausea and damage to the kidneys and nervous system. How To Remove It From Tap Water: Water filtration devices certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 53 or Standard 58 or Standard 62. Carbon filters, reverse osmosis filtration systems, water distillers (if they are fitted with carbon filters) or whole house filters are excellent for this purpose.
