Remove Lindane From Your Tap Water
Lindane (also known as gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane) is a white crystalline organic powder used as a pesticide to tackle beetles, mites and other insects that infect cattle, gardens, pets, plants, soil and wood. It is also used to treat skin conditions such as pediculosis and scabies. This substance also goes by the following names: Exagamma, Forlin, Gallogamma, Gammaphex, Inexit, Kwell, Lindagranox, Lindaterra, Lovigram and Silvanol. Source of contamination: When the substance is used in the agricultural industry or in homes, residue may enter the surface water. Drinking Water Standards: The maximum contaminant level (MCL)is 0.2 ppb (parts per billion). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that water suppliers test for this contaminant and notify the public if toxicity exceeds the MCL. Health Effects: At levels above the MCL, short term exposure to gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane can lead to a fever and pulmonary edema. If exposed over the long term, it can damage the kidneys and liver. How To Remove Gamma-Hexachlorocyclohexane From Drinking Water: Use a water filter or purifier that is capable of removing volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), that is, certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 53. A countertop water filtration system or a water distiller fitted with a carbon filter is excellent for this purpose.
