Fluoride In Water

Potential Health Effects & How To Reduce Them

Fluoride in water - how does it get in there? Actually, it is a naturally occurring element found in water as well as living organisms, rocks and soil.

However, since the 40s, many American communities have this element added to their drinking water. This followed research showing that fluoridated water hardened tooth enamel and making it more resistant to decay.

Source of Water Contamination: Fluoride is added to some water supplies and can also get into your water supply via discharge from fertilizer and aluminum factories.

Drinking Water Standards: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set the maximum contaminant level (mcl)of at 4 milligrams per liter (mg/L) which is the legal allowable limit of fluoridation in water.

Should water authorities discover that fluoride exists in the water supply above the mcl, they must take steps to reduce the contamination to sub-mcl levels.

However water fluoridation has been endorsed by The American Dental Association (ADA), The American Medical Association (AMA), The World Health Organization (WHO) and many other public health organizations. They maintain it is safe when used below the mcl.
