Chromium In Water

Removing It With Filtration

The EPA regulates the chromium in water because it is believed that this contaminant could be a risk to public health.

What Is Chromium: It is an odorless, tasteless, inorganic metallic element in the periodic table. It is found naturally in plants, rocks and soil.

This metal is used for making steel and in electroplating, dyes pigments, leather and wood preservation.

Sources Of Contamination: When chromium is discharged from steel and pulp mills or eroded from rocks, it could get into ground water. Chromium can be present in water in two forms: hexavalent (chromium 6) and trivalent (chromium 3).

Drinking Water Standard: Under the Safe Drinking Water Act, the EPA is mandated to determine drinking water standards for contaminants that can pose a danger to public health.

One such standard is the maximum contaminant level (mcl) which is the maximum amount of a particular contaminant that is legally allowed in the water supply.

For water supply contaminants that are assigned mcl values, municipal water authorities must routinely screen for these contaminants. If it is found that any one of those contaminants exist in the water supply at levels above their respective mcls, water authorities must take the following steps:

1) They must reduce the contamination to sub-mcl levels

2) They must notify customers of the contamination within 30 days of discovering the problem.

If necessary, alternative drinking water sources may be provided to prevent serious harm to public health.

The mcl for chromium in water is 0.1 mg/L.

It is also worth mentioning that not all drinking water contaminants are assigned mcl values and hence are not considered a potential harm to public health.

Such contaminants are assigned secondary maximum contaminant levels (smcl). Those contaminants only affect the aesthetics of tap water, that is, the look, smell and taste of water.

Since those contaminants are not considered a potential danger to public health, municipal water authorities are not required to routinely screen for them.

However to ensure that customers are not turned off by the look, taste and smell of their tap water, municipal water authorities try to limit the presence contaminants that are assigned smcl values.

Potential Health Effects: Chromium-3 is often present in multivitamin and mineral supplements. However, it is not desirable to have chromium exist in drinking water at levels above the mcl. Such levels of toxicity could cause kidney and liver problems as well as circulatory disorders.

Home Water Treatment: Do you really need a household water filter to remove the chromium in water?

The EPA and your municipal water authority will tell you that having a water filter installed is not necessary because your tap water is safe.

Sure enough, when one compares the quality of tap water in North America say to some poorer countries, it is a lot safer. But a household water filter acts like an insurance policy - offering you protection against what could happen or what is happening.

What could happen? At any time, a spike in the the presence of a particular contaminant in our drinking water could occur.

Back in Milwaukee in 1993, an outbreak of cryptosporidium (waterborne parasite) occurred in the drinking water despite municipal water purification. Around 400,000 people suffered from gastric illnesses and almost 60 people died.

If every household in Milwaukee had a quality household water filtration systems installed - it is not far-fetched to think that a lot less people would have gotten sick.

But that was 1993 - what about today? Well, there have been several reports and even studies indicating the presence of pharmaceutical drugs in drinking water of millions of Americans.

Now, while these drugs are not present in amounts that can cause immediate or short term illnesses, many scientists are worried about their long term health effects.

An activated carbon water filter such as this countertop water filter or this under counter water filter can eliminate drugs from your drinking water as well as cryptosporidium.

What about removing the chromium in water? This reverse osmosis water filter can remove the chromium in water. And even better is the fact this filter is certified to NSF 58 standard.

NSF certification ensures that there is no discrepancy between what contaminants a filter can remove and what contaminants the manufacturer says the filter can remove. This certification guarantees a high level of performance for customers.

Your family deserves the safest drinking water possible. When you install a home water filtration system, you'd be giving them just that.
