Cadmium Drinking Water Contaminants

Cadmium is a bluish-white metallic element naturally found in ores such as copper and zinc. It has several uses – a few of which are, the making of dental fillings, batteries and rustproof electroplating.

This element can potentially contaminate your tap water so using an appropriate drinking water filter will give you solid protection

Source of Contamination: When galvanized plumbing or the the pipes of your water main are corroded, the element can get into your water supply.

Drinking Water Standards: The maximum contaminant level (mcl) of this element allowed in the water supply is 5 parts per billion (ppb). Above this level, your water supplier is duty bound to notify the public and take the necessary steps to reduce the contaminant to a level below the mcl.

Health Effects: In the short term, drinking water containing this element at levels above the mcl could potentially cause convulsions, cramps, diarrhea, kidney failure and vomiting. In the long term, more serious liver and renal failure can occur.

Removing This Drinking Water Contaminant: A house water filter certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 58 or 62 will remove this element from your tap water.

Examples of such filtering devices are reverse osmosis water filter and a countertop water distiller. Either of these will do the job perfectly.
