Removing Smelly & Bad Tasting Water From Your Home

If you have smelly or bad tasting water in your home it is a problem that requires your immediate attention. Not only is it unpleasant to drink such water but could represent a health risk if the contamination exists for a protracted period.

It is therefore important to take steps to safeguard yourself your family and friends from such contamination.

Source of Contamination: There are a wide variety of reasons why your home may have smelly or poor tasting tap water. These reasons mostly stem from inadequate municipal water purification, excess amount of certain contaminants in the water supply or a problem with water quality monitoring.

Drinking Water Standard: The EPA specifies the maximum amount of drinking water contaminants that are allowed in our water supply. This amount is known as the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) and applies to contaminants that pose a risk to public health.

Should a particular contaminant exceed the MCL, water authorities are duty bound to notify households and take corrective measures.

The EPA also sets non-mandatory regulations for drinking water contaminants that it does not consider a risk to public health. Such contaminants only have aesthetic or cosmetic effects on tap water.

Consequently, there is no MCL for having bad taste and odor in tap water because such contamination is not normally considered a health risk.

However water authorities do conduct tests to ensure that their water supplies are aesthetically pleasing.

Health Effects: Having smelly or bad tasting water is not normally considered a major health hazard. However if this problem persists contact your local water authority. Also, install a quality water filter in your home to remove such contamination.

Home Water Treatment: In order to eliminate smelly or poor tasting water from your home, you can acquire a home water purification system certified to NSF 42 standard. Quality activated carbon water filters are usually certified to such a standard.
