Atrazine In Water

Removing It With Water Filtration

The EPA regulates the atrazine in water because it believes, at certain levels of toxicity, it could pose a danger to public health.

What Is Atrazine: This substance is a white, crystalline solid organic compound used as a herbicide.

Potential Source Of Contamination: When atrazine is used as a herbicide on crops, the runoff may enter surface water and end up in rivers and streams.

Drinking Water Standard: The EPA is mandated to determine standards for water supply contaminants that may cause health problems.

One such standard is the maximum contaminant level (MCL). The mcl is the maximum amount of a particular contaminant that is legally allowed in the water supply. Water authorities must routinely screen for drinking water contaminants that have been assigned mcl values.

Should atrazine or another contaminant exist in the water supply at levels above their mcls, water authorities must take steps to reduce the contamination to sub-mcl levels. They must also notify customers within 30 days of discovering the contamination.

The mcl for atrazine in water is 0.003 mg/L.

You should bear in mind that not all contaminants are assigned mcl values. Some are assigned secondary maximum contaminant levels (SMCL) values.

Such contaminants are not deemed to be a danger to public health because they only affect the appearance, smell and taste of water.

Water authorities are not duty bound to screen for contaminants that have been assigned smcl values. However, to ensure customers get aesthetically pleasing water, water authorities try to prevent excessive amounts of such contaminants from occurring in the water supply.

Potential Health Effects: If over a long period of time, people consume tap water that contains atrazine in excess of the mcl, they could be at an increased risk of getting cardiovascular illnesses and reproductive difficulties.

They also could be at an increased risk of getting mammary gland tumors.

Home Water Treatment: The EPA and municipal water authorities across the country will tell you that getting a home water filtration system isn't necessary. They say that our water supply is safe. But does this mean there is no cause for concern.

Just read the various reports of pharmaceutical drugs in drinking water. Some scientists contend that those drugs could cause long term health problems.

Or read about the dangers of chlorine in drinking water and you see that there is cause for concern.

The fact is that not all contaminants will be removed by municipal water treatment. Furthermore, some water supply contaminants will enter your tap water some time between the water treatment plant and your home.

Wouldn't it be an excellent idea to further reduce or eliminate the remaining contaminants in your tap water thus making it that much safer?

That is what having a home water filtration does for you. Depending on the filter type, chlorine, atrazine and a host of other volatile organic chemicals (VOC) can be removed from your tap water.

Now, not all home water filtration systems can remove the atrazine in drinking water. What you'll need is a activated carbon water filter system. It can remove the atrazine in water, along with drugs, chlorine and vocs.

Rather than getting any activated carbon filter, acquire one that is certified to NSF 53 standard. Water filter certification ensures a certain quality of contaminant removal ability.

This under sink water filtration system and counter top water filter are both activated carbon filters certified to NSF 53 standard.

As a matter of fact these two devices were voted "Best Buy“ by Consumers Digest 6 years in a row.
